Film podzielono na dwa etapy: lata 1947 - 1952 oraz 1953 - 1960 wraz z podsumowaniem w formie epilogu, które z punktu patrzenia na całość widowiska, stanowi jego najważniejszy element. Dzięki takiemu zabiegowi w trakcie seansu zawarto integralną przerwę, którą wyznacza odliczający 15 minut zegar ekranowy.

O czym właściwie jest ten film? To historia architekta i jego twórczości czy może raczej opowieść o człowieku - wraku, którego zniszczyło to co przeżył podczas wojny i tylko w sztuce - architekturze mogą znaleźć ujście gnieżdżące się w nim emocje?

Myślę, że każdy odbierze go trochę inaczej - niektórych dotknie personalnie, niektórych przerazi a jeszcze innych zmotywuje do powrotnego pochylenia się nad historią.

Pierwsze, co już na samym początku zwraca uwagę, to dźwięk. To nie tylko swego rodzaju przerażająca muzyka, która miejscami wywołuje niepokojące ciarki na całym ciele, ale również odgłosy towarzyszące aktorom podczas ich "codzienności". Przykładowo - kiedy podczas jednej ze scen przejeżdżamy przez drewniany most, słyszymy każdą belkę jaką przygina koło - taki zabieg zupełnie zmienia percepcję dźwięku na sali kinowej.

Bardzo podoba mi się podkreślana od samego początku analogia architektury jako masowego środka przekazu idei (co, patrząc z punktu widzenia osoby znającej zakończenie, nabiera jeszcze mocniejszego wydźwięku). 

Film nie mówi wielu rzeczy wprost. Nazwalibyśmy to dualizmem otwartym na interpretację - dla osób znających historię, które w trakcie seansu poznały także pochodzenie głównych bohaterów, wiele scen nabiera zupełnie nowego znaczenia.

Niezwykle ciekawie zarysowano społeczny kontrast ideologiczny w Stanach Zjednoczonych po zakończeniu wojny. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono tutaj na małe społeczności, w których szybkie zmiany społeczno - kulturowe (ponad wszystko różnorodność wyznaniowa), prowadzą do skrajnych zachowań.

Najbardziej uderzająca scena - pociąg z betonowymi płytami wjeżdżający we mgłę. Towarzysząca mu muzyka, pełna niepokoju, wszechobecny mistycyzm oraz wspomniany wcześniej dualizm, który odczytujemy podświadomie.

Choć po pierwszej części brakuje trochę backstory głównego bohatera i jego rodziny (głównie żony), to w tym wypadku nie stawiać tego jako zarzut. To celowy zabieg, aby część II i epilog, który spina film w piękną całość, miały jeszcze mocniejszy wydźwięk.

Geniusz Laszlo i tak właściwie całą historię, wyjaśnia dopiero epilog, podkreślając głębię artysty, który w surowości artyzmu zamknął tragedię i niewyobrażalne cierpienie.

The movie was divided into two main parts: years from 1947 to 1952 and 1953 to 1960, with the complimentary epilogue that acts like the conclusion of the whole story. From the point of view of the person that has seen the entirety it is the most important part.

During the screening we do have a break – 15 minutes are counted down and then the viewers can enjoy the next part – it’s a very nice touch regarding the long running time.

What is “The Brutalist” really about? Is this the story of the architect and his work or is it a story about the wretched person that has suffered the unimaginable pain during the war and only in his art – the architecture, is he able to find a little bit of comfort?

I do believe that every one of us will look at this movie differently – being scared, confused, touched by the duality and brutality – those are the first impressions that come to mind.

The first aspect catching the attention is definitely the sound – that’s not only the soundtrack that we all expect from a movie but at some parts it’s causing the goosebumps all over you – and it’s not pleasurable. Accompanying sound in some of the scenes is almost a real-time experience. Let me give you an example – when in one of the scenes we are riding through the wooden bridge we can hear almost sound of every wooden plank that the wheel touches and it is almost like the shriek.

I do like the highlight put on the analogy of architecture as the mass media of the ideology (looking from the point of view of the person knowing the ending – it touches me even more)!

The movie doesn’t give you everything out at first. We could call it a duality open for the interpretation -  the people who know a little bit about the history and that have learned about the origin of the main heroes during the screening – the shift in perspective on the storyline is guaranteed.

I reckon it’s very interesting how the creators highlighted the ideological contrast in the USA after the war has ended. The captivity of showing the small society where the fast-paced changes in their structure are leading to the extreme behavior – that’s the cherry on top.

The deeply striking scene is the one where the train carrying the concrete parts for the ongoing construction is being submerged in the fog. That music full of uneasiness, ubiquitous mysticism and the duality that I have mentioned before – we’re just reading the real message in our subconsciousness.

I do agree that after the first part we’re missing a little bit of the backstory for our main hero and his family – but here it is not an allegation. It’s serving a greater purpose – to strengthen the message given in the epilogue – the greatness of the artist that has enclosed the pain and tragedy into the severity of art.
